A veteran pigeon racer is calling on enthusiasts to pay tribute to our diggers by releasing their birds at dawn on Anzac Day

Pigeons are much maligned as the rats of the air but to Ivan Fonti, they're envoys of peace.

He is calling on Australia's 2500 pigeon racers to release them from their homes at sunrise on Saturday to pay tribute to those who have served. On Saturday Mr Fonti most wants to express solidarity with Australian soldiers who fought for freedom in wars. "We don’t know by who. Some people say it was the partisans, some say the [fascist] Ustase. My mother doesn’t even know where her father's grave is," Mr Fonti said.
