Letter: 'The likely result [of vouchers] for public education, almost needless to say, will be reduced teacher morale and the relentless erosion of K-12 quality statewide.'

This year’s scheme, following defeat of last year’s $36 million school voucher bill , aims to create K-12 “scholarships.” The so-called scholarships — or vouchers — would provide $8,000 annually to parents for each of their kids who opt out of public education.

According to Mark Shenefelt of the Ogden Standard-Examiner , scholarships could support private school tuition, home schooling, charter schools, and tutoring services. Also covered would be curriculum materials, online classes, software, extracurricular activities and field trips .Scholarships will come from public school funds, though not in the first year. But in subsequent years, each scholarship will divert 75% away from what public schools would have received.

Other bills targeting transgender people are expected in several additional states with GOP majorities. Gender-affirming health care providers and parents of trans youths are the primary targets. A growing list of other proposals across statehouses target drag performances, bathroom use, LGBTQ discussions in schools and medical gender transitions beyond age 18.
