The meaningless visit by Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan has China in a spin, shaking their weapons at all and sundry.
China’s problem is that Taiwan doesn’t agree and that the US, Australia and others reject military force by China to take control of Taiwan. The question for China, therefore, is not the behaviour of these other nations who reject China’s right to violence. It is how they can peacefully gain the acceptance of the Taiwanese for political reunification. This is the challenge to which the leaders of China, including their Australian ambassador, should be expending their energy.
Being born in 1938, I was old enough to experience life in Sydney during and following the wars in Europe and the Pacific. Life was hard for most people. Blackouts often plunged homes into darkness. Food and meat were rationed and the “food for Britain” campaign had school children lugging butter, corned beef and biscuits to school, even though there was often not enough food on their own tables.
This may be the spin from the new Labor minister – but it is a false claim. Regrettably I was not contacted for comment. But the new minister’s approach suggests she is unconcerned about whether NBN will achieve a such a return on the equity invested by taxpayers. The Australian Financial ReviewAdvertisement
