The China challenge in the Indo-Pacific, Ukraine war, RBA interest rates, HMAS Otama, weather-dependent energy, Bubs’ success and JobKeeper largesse.

I only wish that the Albanese government and the democratic nations of the Indo-Pacific heed Richard Maude’s sage advice on how to counter Chinese influence and ambitions in the Indo-Pacific .It may be too late in the day for Australia and its Western allies to build a united front.Time is of the essence and, regrettably, the Chinese have had the time, money and power to counter anything that Quadrilateral Security Dialogue countries could muster since the group’s inception.

Its formulation of a coherent strategy to counter Chinese influence will eventually be stymied by its internal dynamics and conflicting ambitions and goals. What is essentially needed is a larger coalition of countries – including perhaps like-minded counties such as South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia and, of course, gritty Taiwan – to counter China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific.Ordinary people’s lives are being lost in Ukraine. Refugees are pouring out of their homeland, which is increasingly becoming cement rubble. Ukrainian and Russian soldiers’ lives have been lost in this war.

What happened to the peace talks? The boys need to stop playing war games and come to a compromise about which land belongs to Ukraine and what areas Russia can occupy, as it apparently did in the past. Otherwise there will be nothing left. The Reserve Bank view that households can cope with sharp interest rate increases may be correct overall, but wrong for many families and businesses that have borrowed recently. Many of them did so based on the RBA forecast that rates would not rise until 2024. Further increases will lead to businesses folding and mortgage holders defaulting, and affect the property market .

With federal and Victorian government support, let’s eliminate all the red tape issues, restore HMAS Otama to its former glory and make it into a museum. It could permanently be moored in Geelong, and prove to be a very popular tourist attraction for Australians of all ages, as the public would be able to explore what is a significant part of our naval history.
