Re: “Readers share thoughts on Bible and abortion,” Sunday Letters.
American democracy is not a theocracy. The Bible is filled with contradictions: Exodus 20:13, “Thou shalt not kill.” Exodus 32:27, “Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side ... and slay every man his brother ... companion ... neighbor.” And so on, throughout the Bible. The Founding Fathers were aware of the chaos political parties had caused in the time of Marlborough. Party politics had then caused the collapse of the British government and of the Grand Alliance as they approached triumph in the War of Spanish Succession. George Washington did not expect unity. He sought to resolve disputes through debate among individuals. He recognized that parties formed to support a few ideas often heighten conflict across the full spectrum of issues.
In the unlikely event that Dallas County Republicans are sincere in their opposition to gerrymandering, I suggest that they work to ban the practice across the entire state, and at both the state and county levels. I may not agree with them on many other issues, but if they tackled that issue, I would be happy to support their efforts. How can the Republicans complain about redistricting when they do it all the time? In my case, I have lost two great congressmen due to gerrymandering.
