: For 26 years, I also cycled to work in Calgary year-round except for days below -20 C, in which case I walked. .

On weekends, I drove a week’s worth of wardrobe to my university office. Later, when busy in administration, the bike rides were often the only exercise I got. Another welcome benefit was that my 1991 car accumulated so little mileage that it is now a classic valued at the price I paid in 2000. So besides low maintenance costs, it ends up not having depreciated and continues to serve me during retirement.

With pools closed during the pandemic, I brought my commuter bike back to life and resumed winter rides on cleared pathways.
