Letters to the Editor - Gov. Ron DeSantis, gun control, the Rosenberg spies, California

Readers share their thought about Norma Adams-Wade’s open letter to Gov. DeSantis of Florida; say that as Uvalde students return to school, the Texas governor must do more to stop gun violence; and wonder how many from California will keep coming to Texas.

Like her, I spent my formative years in the Deep South during the 1960s. Racial segregation wasn’t an option back then. It was the law. My young mind had a hard time getting used to it, because I had lived all my life on military bases where white people, Black people and others lived alongside one another, and their children went to school together.

Adams-Wade, who grew up in the Jim Crow South, suggests that “being woke is simply looking truth in the face and walking away more informed.” Isn’t that the point of education?Re: “Families bravely enter new year — On a day many had dreaded, children part with parents amid hugs, tears,” Thursday news story.

For those who will say bringing politics into these tragedies is inappropriate, give me a break. When is the right time? The right time is election time, and Abbott must be held accountable for his role in the gun violence that has plagued our state.Re: “Campaign ad refreshing,” by Robert Stacks, Thursday Letters.

Decisions will rest on what Texas’ positions on reproductive health care demonstrate about women’s rights generally. Texas has instituted statutory restrictions on women’s physical autonomy. Rights in Texas are restricted based on one’s gender. Who wants to work in such a place?I lived in Southern California for 25 years. The weather was great and the support was ample for assistance with transgender kids. But California has its warts.
