Readers’ letters on wasteful spending; the need for a Made in Australia policy; the fantasy of sustainable aviation fuel; Climate 200 candidates; confusing petrol prices; and Woodside’s climate dilemma.
When I go to Woolworths or Coles and give them my money, I get something in return. When money is paid to the government, it’s wasted. In fact, politicians are wasting money on a scale that is hard to comprehend. Just one egregious example is the Victorian government blowing $589 million on not hosting the Commonwealth Games. That is approaching a third of the net profit made by Woolworths for the 2022-23 financial year.
So when I see a politician attacking a businessman with the full weight of the state behind him , I don’t see that as brave or helpful. I just see it as another career politician pretending to care.No doubt they could find a suitable justification in the same neoliberal theories they use to support their views about why it is sensible to locate Australia’s strategic oil reserve in the United States.
So-called sustainable aviation fuels are part of a mindset which insists we can continue a lifestyle bent on high energy consumption while maintaining a safe climate. The only effective way to reduce aviation’s contribution to warming is to reduce flights. It is interesting to note that the Climate 200 group plans to stand up candidates in more electorates, including my own electorate of Bradfield .
