Re: “Paxton fails to name all of his donors — Attorney general raises $2.8 million but misses deadline for disclosure” and “GOP seeks more power for Paxon — Abbott, top Republicans ask court to allow AG to prosecute unilaterally,” Jan. 26 news stories.

Texas has the weakest campaign finance system in the country, but Paxton refuses to clear even this low bar. He has, with the help of a friendly governor and local courts, managed to delay his felony securities fraud trial for over six years. He is under FBI investigation and is fighting charges from his own aides.

And yet another story tells us that Gov. Greg Abbott wants to give Paxton more power. What? Yes, to go after election fraud. Otherwise, robocalls tell us that “Democrats will steal the elections and turn Texas blue.” Murphee rightly points out that choices aren’t the issue. Simply, it is the state’s mandate to provide public education for Texan children. This should be the focus of state leaders, not school choice or parent rights or any other distracting issues.
