Re: “Local democracy in Texas is in danger — Legislative proposal would stop city ordinances if state law touches on subject,” by Brian Rowland, March 29...

These pages also suggested that cities would be unable to address overgrown lots, unsafe waste storage and payday lending, among other issues. And yet, HB 2127 ensures cities retain their authority to address these matters through their public safety, zoning and other regulatory powers. Might I suggest readers look at the bill text, and not the talking points of the Texas Municipal League?

How did we get to the point that we’re allowing Abbott to shamelessly subvert that public good for private gain? If a public library doesn’t have a book you want, you don’t get to ask the taxpayers to buy one for you. If a park doesn’t offer swim lessons at a convenient time, you aren’t entitled to have lessons at the local country club paid for with public money instead.

The relevant topics seemed to grow overly politicized through the process and meaningful discussion on urban planning seemed to break down. We have a much worse problem that seniors are facing, which is the skyrocketing and unaffordable rents here in Texas and nationwide. An algorithm created by a local company about rents has led many landlords to raise rents to unaffordable levels for many, especially for seniors.
