Re: ‘State lawmaker sets the example — Plano Republican showed courage, put people over party in standing up to Paxton adviser,” Friday editorial. You quote...

Thank you to Republican Rep. Jeff Leach for standing for principle. I genuinely wish all of our elected officials would do the same.Re: “State Agency, Please Pay Attention — Contract with vendor that manages facility for sexually violent predators was mishandled,” July 17 editorial. This editorial faults the Texas Civil Commitment Office and its Littlefield detention center for ignoring administrative statutes.

Preventive detention is blatantly un-American. Not following guidelines is the least of TCCO’s faults. Civil commitment panders to fearmongers. Either we have the courage of our founding principles as a free society that deals justly with everyone, or we don’t. TCCO doesn’t. We must continue to shine a bright light on the TCCO-Littlefield black hole.Re: “Progressive church was trolled before firebombing — Anti-LGBTQ YouTubers shot video there weeks prior,” Tuesday Metro & Business story.

Violent attacks like the one on the Plano church that are directed toward any house of worship are simply unacceptable in a civil society. Urgent concern is fully warranted in this case. An attack on one place of worship is truly an attack on all.Re: “DOJ: Remove river barriers — Abbott says he’ll take president to court to defend border actions,” July 22 news story.

This is the latest example of the governor addressing the president as if he and the federal government are enemies. I understand that we have a federal system of government and that some tension and checks and balance are healthy. But federal and state governments should be complementing each other. Instead, Abbott has decided his role and the best use of our tax dollars is to fight, not to collaborate, and to do so with disdain and disrespect.
