Lexi Thompson is proving she belongs — and then some.
Thompson put herself in position to make the cut at the Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas. She began her day firing at 3-under through the first 14 holes.Thompson opened with a 2-over 73 in the first round, which she finished on Friday morning, then opened her second round with a bogey.
Thompson — starting on the back nine Friday — then birdied five of her next 10 holes to storm into the mix for the weekend. “I played decent, I had one bad hole and a few iffy shots. But it’s golf; it was kind of expected,” Thompson, who double-bogeyed No. 7 on Thursday, said after the first round.Thompson is the seventh woman to play on the PGA Tour, a sponsor exemption that only came together in the last two weeks.“I don’t really see it as a challenge,” Thompson said in the days before the tournament. “Coming into a PGA Tour event, being a woman, is a challenge. I just got to play within myself. I know my game.
