TV rivals show that, when it comes to building a big television, there’s more than one way to skin a cat.
| Two of the world’s biggest TV makers, LG and Hisense, have taken radically different approaches to building the world’s biggest televisions., LG took the expensive route to delivering big-screened TVs for the home, announcing a huge, 97-inch OLED TV that connects to its inputs wirelessly, making it easier to mount on a wall without visible cabling.
LG’s mammoth OLED TV, known as the Signature OLED M, divides the TV’s internals into two units: the screen, and a separate box that houses connectors for games consoles, Blu-ray players, soundbars and other external devices, and then beams the data to and from those devices to the TV wirelessly. “One connect” doesn’t send signals wirelessly between the screen and the external connector box, but it combines all the connections into a single cable that also carries power to the screen, meaning both approaches reduce plugging in and wiring TVs to a single-cable affair.
The ULED X TV will use 20,000 mini-LED backlights, which are ganged together in clusters of four lights, giving the TV a whopping 5000 dimming zones which can be lit up or turned off, depending on how bright or dark the part of the image the mini-LEDs is illuminating.
