Meaning its 8K TVs are finally set to actually become 8K TVs
a few weeks ago, in some ways it wasn’t really an 8K TV. Sure, both the Z9 and its LCD-based 75SM9970/75SM9900 sibling carried the necessary 7680x4320 pixel count. Neither set, however, carried the video decoding required to handle the vast majority of potential native 8K sources.
LG has confirmed that the 8K upgrade boxes have now started shipping from South Korea to several regions around the world, including the US and the UK. No installation service is being provided, LG tells me, as the box is so easy to add to its 8K TVs that customers can do it themselves. In particular, the 8K box will be able to add support for the AV1 codec that’s now looking likely to be a key part of the 8K story.
