A local councillor in Victoria's east has been ordered to apologise after publishing a series of social media posts considered harmful to the transgender community, but a LGBTQIA support group says forced apologies are unconvincing.
In her report handed to the Latrobe City Council last night, Dr Gibbs also directed Cr Ferguson to make a written apology on her Twitter account within one week of the council meeting.
"If a tweet is re-tweeted without rejection or denunciation of its contents, there is an implicit endorsement or approval of its contents," the report stated. Cr Lund was present at the meeting and said the arbiter had made it clear that an apology needed to be made, but Cr Ferguson's attempt was disappointing."I think for somebody that is generally remorseful, you can make that apology and be respectful and do that in a heartfelt manner," she said after the meeting.
"We can't just sort of storm around as she did and … spray the things that she did across social media. Most of us cannot do that in our workplaces," he said.
