“I think for me, making music is really the practice of trying to be as present as possible. And of course, presence includes memory,” Lia Kohl said.
Lia Kohl is not afraid to break a few rules. A classically trained cellist, it was Kohl’s experience performing within the city’s ever-growing improvisational and contemporary classical music scene that introduced her to the idea of creating her own music. And her latest foray as a musician is her new record, “The Ceiling Reposes.”
“I started playing with dancers. That was kind of my intro into improvisation,” Kohl recalled. “Dancers are so open with their bodies. And so it’s a special thing that comes with dance improvisation. I kind of entered into it in that way — just like improvising totally, totally freely with dancers.”In improvisation, playing what you feel is more important than getting things “right.” And there was certainly a lot that Kohl has felt over the last few years.
And although it may have been emotionally frightening in the beginning, Kohl said creating for herself also unfurled and answered the questions she often asked herself while performing in more “traditional” groups. Kohl is not just a performer, she realized. She is also an artist, with a whole lot to say and endless ambition to boot.
