Nine-year-old Liam Fulford lost his reading confidence after being diagnosed with a condition that can cause instantaneous blindness. Now he's inspiring young readers while developing his own skills.

Nine-year-old Kempsey boy Liam Fulford has embraced his recently regained eyesight by joining a community group that reads to preschool children.: While Liam's condition may require further treatment, the manager of a local preschool says his reading has inspired other children with eyesight conditions.Concerned teachers at St Joseph's Primary School in West Kempsey told them he was starting to fall behind due to a sudden difficulty reading his schoolwork.

After seeing a local optometrist and eye specialists in Port Macquarie, Liam was diagnosed with pars planitis, an inflammatory eye condition that can cause sudden vision loss.Liam's diagnosis would lead to multiple trips to Sydney for treatment, after doctors discovered scar tissue near his retinas they feared could cause instantaneous blindness.

"It was my intention to enrol him in some kind of public speaking group, just to get his confidence up," Mr Fulford said. For more than 20 years, Sheri Forster has run a literacy program that sees a dedicated group of volunteers travel to preschools across the Mid North Coast to read to children."With all the technology that's around us, if kids can read it's the key to the universe," Ms Foster said.

Ms Barton said the experience had been inspiring for her young son, Brady, who attends the preschool.Liam's mother, Anna Fulford, said the volunteering helped more than just Liam's reading skills."He isn't as shy anymore, and talks a bit more … he's just generally doing much better within himself."
