The singer died in October 2024 in a fall from a third-floor hotel balcony in Argentina.

Liam Payne’s former girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, has shared a nostalgic throwback video to honour the singer ahead of the two-year anniversary of his tragic passing.

Payne died on October 16, 2024, at the age of 31 in a fall from a third-floor hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His tragic death sent shock waves through the entertainment industry, with fans, friends and family continuing to grapple with the immense loss two years later.

In July 2025, Cassidy shared a post calling Payne her “best friend” as she admitted that facing the reality of never seeing him again was something she still couldn’t fully wrap her head around. On Thursday, to mark the second anniversary of his passing, Cassidy shared a sweet clip of the couple together, captioning the post: “2 years ago. Miss you!!!

”Liam Payne’s tragic death Before the tragic accident that claimed his life, Payne was visiting his former bandmate Niall Horan who was in Argentina on tour. The singer had been staying in the upmarket Casa Sur hotel in the capital Buenos Aires for three days before his death. It was reported he fell from the balcony about 5.07pm local time.

Police arrived minutes later, after hotel staff told them a loud sound had been heard in the courtyard where Payne’s body was discovered. He was pronounced dead at the scene, with the emergency services saying there had been “no possibility of resuscitation”. An autopsy, which was carried out that evening, established Payne suffered “multiple traumas” and “internal and external haemorrhaging” with 25 injuries that were “consistent with a fall from a great height”.

In November 2024, the prosecutor’s office said toxicology tests revealed traces of alcohol, cocaine and a prescription antidepressant in his body. Payne was laid to rest on November 20, 2024, in a private funeral service at St Mary’s Church in Amersham, Buckinghamshire. Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik all attended the service separately, marking the first time the four former One Direction members were seen publicly together in years.

Many followers commented on Cassidy’s tribute post, saying they would “forever miss” Payne and urging her to “take care”. However, some critics targeted Cassidy for posting photos and videos of Payne after his death, with some unfairly blaming her for leaving him days before he died. A year after his death, Cassidy broke her silence about the decision to leave, telling The Sun she had returned to Florida to take care of the couple’s rescue dog, Nala.

“I had a responsibility, we had a responsibility. We had our dog and obviously I never, ever thought this event would occur,” she told the UK outlet at the time.

“Love is so optimistic and you just hope that everything will work out at the end. Obviously if I knew, if I could see into the future, I would never have left Argentina. ”
