She will be the first Victorian state Liberal MP to give birth while in office since the 1990s.
During a lengthy debate on education reforms recently, Victorian Liberal MP Jess Wilson – who had been on her feet for 20 minutes addressing the chamber – started to feel queasy and dizzy.
“We were trying to keep it to ourselves because we were rightly nervous, but not having anyone around you who know what’s going on is tough,” she said. “It happens in more than a quarter of all pregnancies, it’s incredibly painful and happens to so many women, but we don’t talk about it enough,” she said.
While politics can provide some flexibility for working parents, state MPs have no formal maternity or paternity leave allowances with their leave usually negotiated with the party's leadership.
