Liberal sources tell the ABC the 'mind-boggling' preselection failure in NSW will motivate the party not to repeat those mistakes in the coming federal election.
Insiders say the New South Wales Liberal Party council nomination "debacle" will cost other senior members their jobs. The party has demanded the nomination deadline be extended and is considering its other legal options.
One NSW Liberal source, who was not politically aligned with the ousted leader, told the ABC "a broom will go through the secretariat".The party's embattled president Don Harwin got on the front foot, demanding the NSW electoral commission give the Liberals an extra seven days to submit the nominations.
"If the Liberal party can't govern themselves, they can't govern New South Wales," Premier Chris Minns told a fiery session of parliament on Thursday.Liberal members have shared similar concerns online and behind closed doors, but senior MPs in Canberra have hosed down concerns. University of Sydney's head of the school of Social and Political Sciences Rodney Smith said big parties could not ignore local politics, because it gave them a presence in local electorates."In rural and regional communities, independents seem to dominate, but even in a number of suburban local council elections there's a high number of independent candidates," Professor Smith said.
"We have to compromise and work together, which tends to bring us towards the sensible centre," Councillor Walton said.
