Labor frontbencher Michelle Rowland says the government needs to learn lessons for the failed attempt to install Kristina Keneally into the Sydney seat of Fowler. The former NSW premier was installed over a local candidate with strong roots in the community, a move which meant the seat was lost to independent Dai Le after a significant backlash.
Keneally, who was attempting to move from the Senate to the House of Representatives, blamed the loss on COVID-19 lockdowns in a weekend interview.“I think many lessons need to be taken from this result but we need to step back, analyse it closely before we come to conclusions. I think everyone needs to be mindful that respect for the electorate is the number one priority. “We need to do things differently, I believe, in terms of community engagement. Between each election priorities do change and methods of campaigning do change and we need to be very alive to that. “Ultimately, voters always get it right and we need to ensure that we always present the best offering for constituents.“ Rowland, who looks set to become the communications minister this week, said the prime minister would be spoilt for choice in appointing women to the frontbench. “Anthony Albanese has made it very clear that he is seeking to have a ministry that is reflective of the Australian community and to promote women as part of that. “There’s a process that will be undertaken and I respect that process and won’t comment on it,” she said.
