Liberal Senator James Paterson has confirmed he will not press charges after being allegedly assaulted by a One Nation volunteer andSenator Paterson was in Albury campaigning for Farrer candidate Raissa Butkowski when the volunteer confronted him over a corflute attacking One Nation candidate David Farley. The One Nation volunteer accused the Senator of “weaponising” Mr Farley’s previous political affiliations on the Coalition corflute, to which Senator Paterson insisted voters had a right to know.
“Well, I mean, David was a member of Labor,” Senator Paterson said, after pulling out his phone to record the confrontation. After a short back and forth, the volunteer allegedly grabbed Senator Paterson’s phone from his hand.
“What's your name mate? Say it, say it. What is your name? That's assault.
You have just committed an assault,” the Senator said after pulling his phone away from the man. Speaking to Sky News host Sharri Markson after the incident, Senator Paterson confirmed he was “perfectly fine” although he acknowledged it was a “bit of a scuffle”.
“I think One Nation, to their credit, have taken this issue seriously and addressed it by removing their volunteer from the booth. “But I think it does show the pressure that they're under here locally. I think David Farley has had a few missteps as a candidate.
"He's made contradictory statements to One Nation, both on reducing immigration on increasing foreign aid, and issues about his past have emerged. ” Last week, revelations surfaced Mr Farley had previously sought preselection for Labor and made social media posts endorsing Teal candidate Michelle Milthorpe. Senator Paterson highlighted that not only did Mr Farley have a “flirtation with Labor”, but that he had a “flirtation with the Teals as well”.
Senator Hanson said One Nation's candidate for Farrer, David Farley, had contacted Senator Paterson to “make sure he was okay”. Picture: NewsWire/Martin Ollman “I think, as One Nation insiders have told the media, he's regarded as a serious flight risk if he is elected. He could very easily join the crossbench where he might be more comfortable and defect from One Nation if he's elected,” the Senator said.
Earlier, Senator Hanson said Mr Farley had contacted Senator Paterson to “make sure he was okay”. Senator Paterson said he was “grateful” for the One Nation leader’s apology, calling it “very gracious”.
“ James Ashby and David Farley, the One Nation candidate, both called me this afternoon to personally apologise and say that the volunteer in question will not be returning to the booth,” he said.
