OPINION: The Liberal Party will continue to lose elections if all it does is just respond to the arguments made by the Labor Party without trying to change the national conversation.
The Liberal Party also lost the debate on climate change and its members allowed themselves to be painted into a corner as climate change deniers.
My point is, in politics you have to win the battle of values as well as the battles on specific policies. There’s no point in being in politics if you don’t enjoy those debates and do not have the courage to take on your opponents.Good politicians have to argue for practical and proportionate solutions and out manoeuvre their opponents.
So, here’s an idea for the new parliament. Given the crisis of labour shortages, it’s about time the parliament allowed pensioners to work. The idea that pensions are withdrawn if pensioners generate income is keeping hundreds of thousands of people out of the workplace. I mention nuclear power and letting pensioners work as two new initiatives the parliament – and in particular the Liberals – can embrace.
