Victorian Indigenous senator Lidia Thorpe has called for “truth-telling and treaty” to end what she claims is an ongoing “war” on Indigenous people.
to enshrine an Indigenous Voice to Parliament in the nation’s founding document on Saturday, in the first referendum held in 24 years.
“Well, I think that's a really wrong narrative to begin with. And that's why people are hurting so much today.” “We need to understand what this country is about, and we need truth-telling – through truth-telling, we can heal… yes, we need a treaty,” Senator Thorpe said. “We need to end that war. And the only way we can do that is through truth-telling, healing, and ultimately a treaty.
“Our people know who they are out there, we have the language groups out there identified, recognised, they have their own song, dance, culture, connection. They are the only ones who can self-determine their own destiny, she said.
