Independent Senator Lidia Thorpe has been heavily criticised on social media for a post she shared in support of Palestine amid the conflict in Israel.
Palestinian militant group Hamas launched an unprovoked attack on Israel on Saturday with the death toll continuing to climb towards 1,000 including many women and children.
“Millions of people are suffering and you use their suffering for self promotion. You are a disgrace to our Senate. And btw, that map has been debunked so often it isn't funny. You credulous idiot.” “Their problem is that this series of maps is riddled with misrepresentations and omissions, and their overall narrative is an outright lie,” the article reads.
Senator Thorpe’s social media post is not the first time she has endorsed Palestine after last month calling on the government to recognise the sovereignty of Palestinians. More than 700 people were killed and thousands more have been injured in Israel as forces continue to fight against the incursion by Hamas militants on Saturday.
The United Nations quickly organised a series of crisis meetings with representatives from Israel and Palestine present in an attempt to defuse the violence.
