Communities in Schools of Houston, is a local organization that seeks to provide resources for children in schools that are struggling, looking for ways to help students beyond the classroom.

The goal of CIS sounds simple, though it contains multiple platforms that offer a variety of services. “The goal,” she says, “is to help students succeed academically … and also in life.” “Year over year, we’ve demonstrated successes,” Descant says. “I think that’s something that sets us apart. The TEA holds us accountable.”

“Our work starts pre-K, but we’re helping kids envision a tech degree, a two-year degree, a four-year degree. We want to set them up for that attainment.”
