After a hectic decade making a name for herself as the “punk poet laureate” of 1970s rock and roll, Patti Smith stepped away from the stage to focus on her family and writing. Sixteen years later she started touring again. In 2010 she won a National Book Award fora memoir chronicling her relationship with the artist Robert Mapplethorpe. Her most recent work,You’ve tried different forms of creative expression.

The core of all my important relationships is work. Sam and I had our time as lovers but had a lifetime as loving friends who worked together until his death. We wrote a play together; we wrote songs together. What kept Robert and me going after we split up as a couple was our belief in each other’s work. We liked to collaborate, and that saved our relationship.
