The fishing trawler was on route from the Isle of Bute in Scotland to Kilkeel, Co Down when it contacted the Coastguard to say it had lost electric power and was 'not confident of its location'

A volunteer lifeboat crew had to come to the rescue of a 40ft fishing trawler off the coast of Donaghadee in the early hours of Thursday morning.

READ MORE: Heartbreak as five-month-old Belfast baby dies of meningitis hours after arriving in hospitalA statement from Donaghadee RNLI said: "A 40ft fishing trawler with one person onboard, was on passage from Rothesay in the Isle of Bute to Kilkeel, County Down, when they contacted the Coastguard to report that they had no electrics although they did have power and steering, but they were not confident of their location and thought they may be in Belfast Lough.

The lifeboat crew was able to establish that the skipper was safe, and later escorted the trawler to the Bangor Coastguard after 6am in the morning.
