The landmark Melbourne Star Observation Wheel has closed permanently almost 13 years after it began operating in 2008 | cassieemorgan

The lights that lit up Melbourne’s skyline for more than a decade have gone dark with the Melbourne Star observation wheel ceasing to spin on what its general manager called a “very sad day”.

The observation wheel’s general manager Nicole Hill, who has been at the helm of the attraction for just under five years, said her team were devastated by the news it would be closed for good. The reaction to the attraction’s closure on Monday was mixed. Leah Cripps, from Bendigo, said she and her two children rode it last school holidays.

One said its location was “appalling”, past the “Docklands high-rise flats wasteland, and no one in Melbourne knew how to actually get there”.Ms Hill said the observation wheel had more than 300,000 visitors every year. “I’m not going to comment on the location because proof is in the pudding – people were coming, we were very busy,” she said.
