A human rights lawyer, and families, are calling for the New South Wales government to step up measures to vaccinate prisoners, while an Indigenous elder says COVID-19 testing in jails is inadequate.
Sally says her husband is serving a six-month sentence in Nowra Correctional Centre and has been trying to get vaccinated for three months.
The reason they were moved there was so they could be near a tertiary hospital in case it was needed.They said the network has been vaccinating staff and patients since March and was planning to ramp up its vaccination program over the coming weeks.Meanwhile, an Indigenous elder on the NSW south coast has criticised COVID-19 testing regimes in prisons, with concerns a recently released inmate has tested positive in Batemans Bay.
That's not good enough, according to Mr Smith, because it was putting the vulnerable Indigenous population at risk., following the release of an inmate who contracted COVID-19, could unfold in the south-east if the spread of infection wasn't controlled quickly. Katungul Aboriginal Medical Service GP Muhammed Azfar No-Zaihan said it could be devastating to the local Indigenous population if cases continued to rise."It would be a long-lasting impact as well, not just for the current generation, but future generations in the Aboriginal community."
