Such is the soothing effect of two finals victories after 10 years out of September, the departures of two of Stephen Silvagni’s first-round selections and the impending exit of Paddy Dow have barely raised a ripple.

Stephen Silvagni did the heavy lifting in assembling a list that has Carlton belatedly ready for a tilt at a 17th flag, but it’s his misses that will cloud how history judges one of the most extensive and painstaking rebuilds the league has seen.

Four years after his last draft and trade period, there is enough evidence to make an informed judgment on Silvagni’s five-year reign as the Blues’ list manager. Like the estranged Blues great’s relationship with the club, it’s complicated. “One draft for three stars, that sets them up,” the former industry insider said on the condition of anonymity to speak more freely.

“He’s taken time to find his feet, but now he’s showing he’s an exceptional talent,” Pelchen, who helped put together Hawthorn’s 2008 premiership team, said. “If the draft was held again, no way would he be pick 30.”Zac Fisher’s 107 games was about par for pick 27, but the Blues would have wanted much more from Dow, O’Brien and Petrevski-Seton.

The Giants used the Blues’ pick four on Lachie Ash, who, with his dash and class, is precisely the type of player that Carlton coach Michael Voss would love to have. Mitigating the damage, the deal gave the Blues access to young defender Brodie Kemp, who signed a contract extension to 2025 this year.
