A farm near Sydney is under lockdown after bird flu was found in chickens, the first outbreak in the state in more than a decade.
Bird flu has been detected on a commercial egg farm in Sydney’s Hawkesbury region, triggering an emergency biosecurity lockdown as experts brace for more outbreaks in NSW over the coming weeks.
The egg farm was immediately locked down in accordance with the NSW government’s emergency protocols, with the birds, other animals and equipment on the farm placed in quarantine to prevent further spread of the disease.A one- to two-kilometre area around the farm is expected to come under biosecurity controls later on Wednesday as a precaution. Authorities are preparing to euthanise poultry on the affected egg farm.
Spillover events refer to the virus jumping from wild birds to domestic poultry. Wild birds, such as migratory ducks and geese, carry about 140 different types of the virus and can infect chickens and ducks on farms as they pass by.Professor Michael Ward, University of Sydney “I think there will be more events through winter,” Ward said. “But spillover events are still quite rare so I don’t think it’ll be a lot of farms.”
