With Michael Shannon returning to the DCEU as the villain General Zod in The Flash, the Man of Steel star reflects on coming back one last time.

Michael Shannon was brutally honest about how unsatisfied he was about the end results of his General Zod return in The Flash. Barry Allen is returning to cinemas as of this week, with Ezra Miller reprising the role of the DC icon in The Flash movie. While being a loose adaptation of Flashpoint, The Flash movie will tackle the multiverse, bringing some blasts from the past back.

One such return is that of the DCEU's first supervillain, as Michael Shannon is coming back as General Zod in The Flash, following his appearances in Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. In an interview with Collider, Shannon opened up more about portraying the iconic Superman foe one last time.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Yeah. I’m not gonna lie, it wasn’t quite satisfying for me, as an actor. These multiverse movies are like somebody playing with action figures. It’s like, “Here’s this person. Here’s that person. And they’re fighting!” It’s not quite the in-depth character study situation that I honestly felt Man of Steel was. Whether people think that’s crazy or not, I don’t even care.

An easy trope that a lot of comic book and superhero movies fall into is having pretty one-dimensional villains, which wasn't the case with General Zod in Man of Steel. Zack Snyder's take on the DC villain was complex and not a simple mustache-twirling bad guy, as he had a mission to keep the Kryptonian race alive. Based on what Shannon says about Zod's return in The Flash, it appears they didn't attempt to do a different story this time around.

Given that The Flash directly explores the concept of alternate universes, there was ample potential to try something new with Shannon's General Zod in the DCEU installment. As such, it's understandable to hear Shannon discuss how reprising the role wasn't as satisfying for him as an actor, especially if he felt the role was limited compared to his work in Man of Steel.
