Only half of overseas students living in Australia secure work after graduation, scathing new figures have revealed, amid a federal government crackdown on student visa fraud.
A new Grattan Institute report laid bare a harsh reality facing more than 600,000 young people who flock to the nation’s universities in hopes of landing a stable job.
The government gives ‘false hope’ to thousands of graduates who will never gain permanent residency, the report said. Picture: Dean Lewins/AAP. There were about 654,870 student visa holders in Australia in July this year, according to official data. According to the Grattan report, the government’s “generous” policy will leave tens of thousands of young people “in limbo” working in low-paid jobs unrelated to their career aspirations.
It pushed to raise English language requirements for graduate visa holders and limit graduate visas to people younger than 35. New findings come after Education Minister Jason Clare announced a crackdown on visa loopholes to prevent people from entering Australia on student visas without actually studying.

Armenian-Australians protest against Azerbaijani offensive in Nagorno-KarabakhHundreds of Armenian-Australians are gathering outside the Turkish, Azerbaijani, Russian and United States embassies in Canberra to protest Azerbaijan's military offensive in Nagorno-Karabakh. The Armenian-Australian community is calling on the United States and Russian governments to do more on the ground in Nagorno Karabakh as indigenous Armenians are pushed out from their ancestral homeland. The Armenian National Committee of Australia Chair Vache Kahramanian called on Australia to join its international allies in delivering urgent humanitarian assistance through the Red Cross. “Australia also needs to call out Azerbaijan for this aggression,” he told Sky News Australia. “It took far too long for Australia to raise its voice and today it needs to look at itself in the mirror as the bastion of a country who champions human rights around the world to also call out Azerbaijan for its ethnic cleansing of about 120,000 people in the 21st century.” Azerbaijan's government has rejected accusations of ethnic cleansing.

Mr Worrall joined Sky News Business Editor Edward Boyd to discuss employee burnout. “The burnout that we are seeing in the survey that we’ve completed I think goes to the heart of how do we think about productivity in our businesses and mental health, and what we see in our workplace we think is a really important lever that we should be thinking about,” Mr Worrall said. “We know from 1950 to 2010 ... our productivity has been at around 1.8 per cent as a nation. “Since 2010 through to 2020, that’s dropped to about 1.1 per cent.”
