Everyone seems to have a problem with the eco-friendly bikes. What if we really have a problem with each other?
‘The whole Lime-is-a-scourge line of thought appeals to a very persistent, very selfish bit of the human psyche’
Lime bikes are, in theory, one of life’s good ideas. They’re eco-friendly and silent . They’re convenient, good exercise and even aesthetically pleasing – at least, I like their cheerful green baskets and their chunky frames. But best of all is the frictionless experience of hiring one. Everyone from politicians to newspapers and that guy who runs your corner shop loves nothing more than whinging about a Lime bike clogging up the pavement. But it seems like a staggering failure of logic to blame anyone except the person who lobbed it there. Huffing at Lime for the piles of bikes that litter our city streets is like complaining to a hotel when you’ve trashed your own room. It’s time we faced facts. Lime’s fine, or as fine as any big business can be; it’s us who are the problem.
I’m normally the first to assign responsibility to corporations and governments rather than individuals. But that’s not because I think most individuals are inherently nice. We’re just less powerful than the forces that buffet us about.
