Indigenous Australians minister scathing of opposition leader invoking late Yolŋu leader to argue against the voice

minister, Linda Burney, has launched a stinging attack on the opposition leader, Peter Dutton, for taking the name of late Yolŋu leader and voice campaigner Yunupingu “in vain” while campaigning against the referendum.

Dutton claimed the voice would create more bureaucracy in Canberra and repeated calls for more detail about how the voice would work, before going on to mention Yunupingu’s community in the Northern Territory. The voice would be a non-binding advisory committee of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people that could make representations to the government and parliament about issues relating to Indigenous Australians. The prime minister, Anthony Albanese, and numerous ministers have envisaged it as a mechanism by which ideas that have been effective in certain communities could be raised with the government and replicated elsewhere.
