Linda Burney, the first Aboriginal woman to enter the House of Representatives, makes her departing speech, saying the failed Voice referendum can still be a catalyst for change.
Linda Burney has delivered her valedictory speech to parliament, ahead of her retirement at the coming federal election.
Delivering her valedictory speech to the lower house, Ms Burney said she would leave with "a heart full of hope". "We don't have to choose between so-called practical and symbolic reconciliation – it's a false choice, it's a phoney argument," she said. She became the first Indigenous woman in the House of Representatives in Canberra after winning the federal Sydney seat of Barton in 2016.At the time, a crowded parliament gathered to watch her maiden speech, where she donned a traditional kangaroo cloak that displayed her clan totem, the goanna, and her personal totem, the white cockatoo.
