The parents of former defence minister Linda Reynolds tell a WA court their daughter was viewed as a 'monster' and they were shunned by friends after Brittany Higgins's explosive interview on Channel 10's the Project.
Linda Reynolds 's parents have told her defamation trial of the "devastating" impact Brittany Higgins 's allegations had on them and their daughter.
Laith and Janice Reynolds told the WA Supreme Court they were stunned and devastated by Ms Higgins's allegations, since the young woman had previously told them, just weeks after her alleged rape, that she had achieved her "dream job" by working with their daughter. Former Prime Minister Scott Morrison concurred during his evidence yesterday, saying Labor had "weaponised" the rape allegation to damage his then-defence minister and himself, eventually causing her health to deteriorate so badly he thought it could be fatal.
Linda Reynolds, who was then defence minister, broke down in tears in the Senate in February 2021, days after Brittany Higgins's bombshell interview with Channel 10.Mr Reynolds remembered meeting Ms Higgins in Perth in 2019 in the lead up to the federal election and after the alleged rape, which had occurred on March 23, 2019.
Senator Reynolds's lawyer Martin Bennett has previously presented evidence to the court showing Ms Higgins at several events in Perth during and immediately after the campaign with Senator Reynolds, including texts where Ms Higgins spoke positively of her experience.Ms Higgins's lawyer Rachael Young has suggested to the court this did not counter the claim her client was not properly supported after the alleged rape.
