City walls were fortified regularly over the years, and Lindum Colonia was shaped into the Lincoln we know and love today. It is also the oldest canal still in use in the United Kingdom, having been built in 120 AD to connect the River Witham in Lincoln with the River Trent in Torksey.Perhaps the most uniquely positioned of the Roman trail, the Lower West Gate is situated at The Park, next to City of Lincoln Council's City Hall offices.
There are multiple along Bailgate, and they each show the bases of columns that formed a colonnade running along The Forum in uphill Lincoln, a busy area for the city in Roman times.Without question the most recognisable and famous Roman remains in Lincoln is Newport Arch - the oldest arch still in operation and used by traffic in the country.
