When Lisa Marie Fernandez relocated from New York to Los Angeles a couple of years ago it was hard not to write about the swim designer’s new lifestyle with envy. Canyon living secluded enough for skinny dipping in the infinity pool—how could it get any better? A few fire seasons and hundreds of horrific photos of the Getty , Malibu , and Thomas fires later and New York apartment dwelling holds renewed appeal.
Fernandez has no plans to move back East—for now at least. But she’s talking about her collection in a new way, touting its sustainability bona fides.
Impending climate catastrophe will require sacrifices at a scale that we humans are only just now beginning to comprehend. While we wait for the U.S. government to experience its own awakening on this subject, the onus is on designers themselves to make important production changes. Fernandez has begun that process.
