Depictions of the light-skinned, submissive maiden in the Pacific Islands are nothing new, but a new generation of women is pushing back on the colonial stereotype.
A new documentary called Myths and Maidens explores depictions of the " dusky maiden " — an exoticised image that sells a stereotyped fantasy to the Western world.
The dusky maiden has been described as, her "skin never too dark, hair never too frizzy, the acquiescent submissive woman."For Emmaline Pickering-Martin, CEO of OutLine Aotearoa, who features in the film, the representation of Melanesian women was crucial. Emmaline Pickering-Martin hopes more Melanesian stories and voices will be heard, "honoured and cherished".Taouma said her new documentary focused on a timely conversation, given newer generations are "freer and able to discuss and talk about things".
Building on her 1998 research thesis, she emphasises the importance of Pacific women having control over their narratives and said the rise of digital platforms provided space for them to take ownership of their representation.
