Lismore floodwaters swallow $1 million masterpiece | Engalvo

It took six-and-a-half years to complete, and cost $1 million to acquire, but now Geoff Hannah’s masterwork, the Hannah Cabinet, is sitting underthat inundated Lismore Regional Gallery on Monday – and no one knows whether any of it can be saved.

The staggeringly complex piece features 140 drawers and 17 types of precious and semi-precious stones. As well as being a testimony to Hannah’s extraordinary skill, the piece also has immense personal significance for the 73-year-old, who dedicated it to his adoptive family.Alongside the Hannah Cabinet, it’s feared much of the rest of the gallery’s collection, which includes drawings on paper, paintings and photographs, will have been lost in the deluge.

“As soon as possible we’ll go in so we can stabilise any of the artworks that can be conserved,” said gallery director Ashleigh Ralph. “The nature of rugs generally is that they can to some degree be preserved. They will need immediate attention.“We have conservators from across the east coast who are ready to come as soon as we give them the go-ahead.”
