It is hoped MDMA — the active ingredient in the recreational drug ecstasy — will help flood survivors find self-compassion and relief as part of a trial funded by the federal government.

The federal government is spending $3.8 million on a clinical trial using MDMA and nature therapy to treat post-disaster PTSD sufferers.It's hoped the results of the trial will help inform the future treatment of post-disaster PTSD sufferers in other parts of the world.

"Our aim here is to develop better ways to enable people to recover from the trauma of climate-induced disasters." "Prior research has shown that MDMA-assisted therapy is an effective evidence-based treatment for PTSD and enhances self-compassion," Professor Bennett-Levy said.Researchers estimate thousands of people in Lismore still suffer from PTSD following the floods."If you were trapped in a roof with your children and had no way of getting out, it is normal to be traumatised," she said."We had internally displaced people — it was a humanitarian disaster.
