A $50 million purse is set to be divided out in the LIV Golf season finale team championship at the end of October.
The event will feature 12 teams of four men, with the teams receiving a seed number and the top four seeds receiving a bye to the quarterfinals.The format for the October championship was detailed in a court filing in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California as part of an ongoing lawsuit between LIV Golf and some of its players and the rival PGA Tour, according to ESPN. The $50 million purse is the"richest" in golf history, per the report.
The filing also detailed how the seeding will be based on a shootout between the team captains, in which they have to hit a shot closest to a certain marker. The team championship event is scheduled to be hosted at Trump National Doral Miami from Oct. 27-30. LIV Golf previously hosted an event at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, which received criticism from families of victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks over Saudi ties to the golf event.LIV Golf is backed by Saudi Arabia, and the enterprise has been criticized as"sportswashing," or an attempt to repair the country's image via sporting events.
