Last year the total losses were estimated at $3.1 billion, up a massive 80 per cent on the year before.The biggest single type of rip-off comes from investment scams, which claimed at least $1.5 billion from Australians. Scammers are also ruthless in targeting the most vulnerable in society, as my colleague Peter Ryan reported on AM.The ABC's consumer affairs reporter Michael Atkin, along with the specialist reporting team's Leonie Thorne and Loretta Florance have more details in this story.
