Queensland Health has issued a public health alert after a confirmed human case of Japanese encephalitis virus in the state amid the current flooding event.
The positive case recently travelled to regional southern Queensland and is currently being treated in hospital. JEV is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito to people and animals and is most common in pigs and horses.But someone with a severe case of the virus may have inflammation of the brain known as encephalitis, which is marked by sudden vomiting, severe headaches, high fever, chills, and neck stiffness.
Queenslanders are being urged to take steps to prevent getting bitten by mosquitoes, with the recent floods expected to see an increase in their numbers. Preventative measures include applying insect repellent, wearing loose and light-coloured clothing, and using insecticide-based mosquito control devices outside.
