More than 600 people have died in 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Türkiye and Syria and the death toll continues to climb. Follow live.
The US Geological Survey said the magnitude 7.8 quake struck at a depth of 17.9 km.The region straddles seismic fault lines.
It is the most severe quake in Türkiye since 1999 when a similar magnitude quake devastated Izmit and the heavily populated eastern Marmara Sea region near Istanbul, killing more than 17,000. The tremor lasted about a minute and shattered windows, according to a Reuters witness in Diyarbakir, 350 km to the east, where a security official said at least 17 buildings collapsed.
