An art installation will undergo changes after Dubliners flashed their backsides and showed images of the September 11 attacks up to the camera.

A visual art installation which links Dublin to New York through a portal was temporarily closed after some “inappropriate behaviour” in the Irish capital, including flashing body parts, displaying swear words on phone screens and showing images of the September 11 attacks.

Crowds have flocked to the portal in New York City, which shows a live stream from another portal in Dublin, Ireland. But “technical solutions” will go live in the coming days, Dublin City Council says, after video clips surfaced on social media platforms showing pranksters on the European end holding up videos on their phones of the twin towers burning in September 2001, swastika images and making lewd acts or other offensive gestures.

“While we cannot control all of these actions, we are implementing some technical solutions to address this.”The Irish side of the installation, which does not have audio, takes in views of the General Post Office and Dublin’s Spire monument.

The Portals Organisation, the company behind the installation, said that it briefly paused the livestream on Monday to “update the software used”.
