Authorities say the plane was attempting a crash landing due to a malfunctioning landing gear when it veered off the runway and collided with a fence at Muan Airport. Follow live.

A plane carrying 181 people has burst into flames after veering off a runway during landing at an airport in South Korea , killing at least 120 people on board. The control tower issued a bird strike warning and shortly afterward the pilots declared mayday, a transport ministry official said, without specifying whether the flight said it struck any birds.

In 2013, an Asiana Airlines plane crash-landed in San Francisco, killing three and injuring approximately 200. The death toll is expected to rise further as the rest of the people aboard the plane remain missing about six hours after the incident. They are both being treated for moderate to severe injuries, but remain conscious, health officials say.

Authorities suspect there was a landing gear failure that caused the crash and are looking into whether a bird strike is responsible.A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesperson has confirmed no Australians were known to be onboard the fatal Jeju Air flight. He says the cause of the crash was still unclear and that Jeju air will cooperate with the government in its investigation of the crash.

Senior Transport Ministry official Joo Jong-wan separately told reporters that government investigators arrived at the site to investigate the cause of the crash and fire.North Asia correspondent James Oaten tells News Channel says the Jeju aircraft was attempting to do a controlled crash landing — known as a "belly landing" — before it crashed with the barrier.
