Head of the mercenary Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin has called off his coup. Vladimir Putin remains President but there is no doubt his grip on power is severely weakened.
Why did Prigozhin call off the coup?
As his men continued their “march” to Moscow, the mayor declared a counter-terrorism operation and essentially put the city into an emergency state, even giving everyone the day off on Monday so they could stay indoors and refrain from moving around the city. He himself bragged that when he went into Rostov, he was able to take command of the military headquarters without firing a single shot.Earlier, Putin had laid into the Wagner Group boss, calling him a traitor and vowing that he’d be punished.
